Leon Humphrey is a coach in Startown and a storyteller in the Theatre and plays “Grandpa Henry” and host in 252 Avenue! Mr. Leon has been attending Bethlehem Church with his wife, Judy, for over 12 years and served in Startown for more than 4 years! He loves serving Jesus in Startown and knows that this is what God has called him to do. “I don’t ever want to quit. My favorite thing is the hugs and high fives from the kids. I love the kids!!! My role is an investment in the future of some of the most wonderful young men and women on planet earth and they will be world changers when they reach adulthood. In many cases they are already world changers!”
Leon and Judy have four grown children, including our very own children’s minister, Leanne Fontenot! The Humphrey’s have 8 grandchildren with another one on the way. When Mr. Leon is not handing out high-fives as he welcomes kids to Startown, he can be found in his custom stained glass studio, working in real estate, and doing public and motivational speaking. He enjoys woodworking, golf, grilling out, gardening, and bird watching. His wife is an excellent baker and cook, but if they are not eating at home, you might find the Humphreys eating at Ashia Chinese Restaurant of the Thai House.
Mr. Leon is 67 years young and the one thing many people do not know about him is that he spent his childhood in western Kentucky in a very poor area. He was 18 years old before he lived in a house with indoor plumbing!
As a kid, Mr. Leon wanted to be a doctor and a preacher. He is an ordained ministered and served as pastor in churches in four states. Over the years, Leon has also been a beef cattle farmer, tire changer, aerobics instructor, and even an engineering aid at Kennedy Space Center!
The wisest person Mr. Leon has ever known was his grandfather who made time for little Leon and made him feel special. “I can remember him talking about characters in the Bible as though they were next door neighbors,” Mr. Leon recalls of his grandfather. Leon’s favorite scripture verse is Romans 8:28, “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him, to those who are called according to His purpose.” This verse assures him that God is in control and that He always has our best interest at heart.
Look for Mr. Leon all over the place in Startown on almost every Sunday!
